BART EMERGENCY LIGHTING PROJECT
SF BAY AREA, CA

The BART Emergency Lighting Project is a safety-focused initiative aimed at upgrading the emergency lighting systems in BART stations. The project, valued at $14.84 million, will replace outdated emergency lights with modern LED fixtures that provide better visibility and reliability during power outages or emergencies. Many of BART’s existing emergency lights do not meet current safety standards, and this upgrade ensures that passengers and staff can safely evacuate stations if the main power system fails.

A key component of this project is improving the battery backup systems that power emergency lights. The new system will provide extended illumination time, allowing stations and tunnels to remain lit for longer periods in emergencies. This is especially critical for passenger safety, as well as for first responders who need clear visibility when assisting during crises. By installing long-lasting, energy-efficient LEDs and stronger battery backups, BART is addressing a crucial safety need and modernizing its infrastructure.

The work is being carried out in phases to minimize disruptions to BART service, with most work happening during night hours or off-peak times. While this may not be as noticeable to everyday riders as new trains or track expansions, it’s a critical upgrade that enhances safety for everyone. Once completed, the project will provide a more secure transit environment, ensuring that BART stations remain well-lit and functional in emergencies.
